Introduction In the last semester of my eighth grade year, I was assigned to do a Genius Hour presentation. Genius Hour is a program where you are supposed to come up with an open-ended question that you have been wondering about and do an experiment of some kind to test it and figure out an answer. The question that I chose that had interested me was "What effects can becoming vegetarian have on the human body?" To find out the answer, I decided to go vegetarian for two weeks along with two other test subjects, which were my science teacher and my friend. I conducted research about the subject before creating an experiment and that is linked below as well as the final product in slideshow format.

To produce this particular piece of work, I did a lot of research. This was my first assignment where I needed to create an experiment and carry through with it all by myself so I made sure I was more than prepared. I researched in class nearly every day and knew a lot about the types of vegetarians and what effects it could possibly have. Nearly all of my sources for my research were credible websites that I found that had lots of knowledge about the topic. After I did all my research, I created a chart for me and my test subjects to use to track our results over our journey of becoming vegetarian. It was definitely difficult for me to complete this experiment because I love to eat meat, but I got through it.
I am very proud of this piece of work because of all the hard work I spent on it. Many other people in my class chose to go with a different approach to find out their answers, such as just doing research and creating a model of their topic to receive credit. I, however, took this assignment very seriously and wanted to do my very best. Like I said, it was my first real experiment and I really enjoyed learning how to create and carry through with an experiment. My standards for this piece of work were very high because my question was something that I had wondered about for a very long time and I wanted an answer. After completing my experiment and analyzing the results, I learned that becoming a vegetarian can effect your weight, but it definitely depends on factors such as your gender or what you eat. Looking back, I might have considered carrying out the experiment for longer than two weeks and getting more test subjects of different genders. I also might have experimented with different presentation methods, rather than a slideshow. I definitely enjoyed creating this project because I love to do research and try new things. |
